It is quite unusual to have a set of any description at the Edinburgh Fringe, but audiences for Fishbowl at the large Pleasance Grand venue will be greeted what must be the most elaborate and complex scenery in Edinburgh this year. We see the whole top floor of a French apartment building, and the roof and sky above, as well as the interiors of three apartments and a hallway.

The story, told without words, is both hilarious and very easy to follow – truly a show for all and one of the funniest to be seen this year. Developed in Brittany by Le Fils du Grands Résau, the show has a rotating cast of actors to play the three hapless flat-dwellers. One is a gadget-loving minimalist, one a hapless clutterer and the third a young woman moving into a pink apartment with her goldfish.

What follows is an hour and a quarter of delirious fun and expert stagecraft, culminating in a crescendo of disaster which tops anything that has gone before. With trapdoors, countless trick effects and objects travelling from one place to another, it is not surprising that the two stage managers are given a bow at the end.

It is impossible to say more about this phenomenal show without giving away some of the surprises – just go, and enjoy a company that understand visual comedy and have produced an unforgettable show.
