Aliens Love Underpants – Live on stage

Children’s theatre just keeps growing and growing. This week’s contribution to the entertainment of our mini critics – Aliens Love Underpants. The book is part of a range of Alien books, however this story tells of pant-stealing aliens and a boy called Timmy who meets them.
As with all children’s books, there’s often a fair bit of development to the story as it’d be a rather short show otherwise. It’s interesting discovering the devised themes that production companies come up with. This piece centres around some school children and Timmy’s desire to go into space.
It is a real testament to writers and composers to come up with a group of songs that are both catchy and enjoyable. Aliens does just that and the young audience loved the interactive singing by the energetic foursome onstage.
The set was relatively simple but used to good effect with plenty of flashing lights and uv (show me a pre-schooler that doesn’t like flashing lights?!). I’m not sure telling an auditorium of excited children that the show is cancelled (as a starting point) is wise however – I’m amazed no-one burst into tears!
Definitely one for younger audiences, as it is totally different to the book if your child loves the story, warn them. Whilst I appreciate the production quality of the piece and fully recommend it for little alien fans, it wasn’t Mini Sardines’ favourite show to date. It is however a great introduction to live theatre with its interactivity and visual delights.
