The Edinburgh Fringe is an open access event, and it is one of the benefits of this that performers of all ages can be seen acting, singing and dancing. The talented Lambrook Theatre company did all three in their play Breaking Voices, written by Lambrook School drama teacher Peter Bird, and one of two productions from the school at Edinburgh this year.
Appearing at a very small venue in a vault must have been challenging for this group, who have access to an excellent Arts Centre at their school, but the experience of appearing at Edinburgh must have been an excellent learning opportunity for them all.
The play, set in a detention room and featuring the thoughts of a disparate collection of young teenagers and pre-teens, was well-suited to the group and gave them the opportunity to show what they were capable of, with even the backing group of campfire singers making the most of every opportunity they had.
The main cast, boys and girls, all did well, and impressed both individually and as a group, especially during the rather complicated and unexpected final moments. There were no weak links, although three boys in particular made their mark. Sam Rennie launched straight into a confident solo after what must have seemed a long wait for the audience to take their places, James Rennie made the most of his arrival in the room and took charge of the action, and Columbus Mason showed himself more than capable of acting two parts at once and doing so most convincingly and with humour.
This was essentially, however, an ensemble piece and the whole group are to be congratulated on their achievement, as are those who made it possible for them to take part in the Fringe for what I am sure will not be, for many of them, the only time.
