Underbelly’s Circus Hub was the setting for the last performance of Sweatshop, a selection of circus and burlesque acts, some of them tasters from performers who have their own shows elsewhere. Many of those in the audience were performers themselves, and there was very much an end of term vibe to the event.
Acts included impressive work on silks and trapeze, and an enthusiastic hula hoop routine, plus some burlesque performances that seemed a little out-classed by comparison. But it is unfair to gripe about what was a slightly ramshackle but good-natured show, ably led by the impressively talented Miss Frisky, who had the audience under her control from her first entrance.
All involved had a good time, in the audience and it seemed on stage, with audience enjoyment greatly enhanced since most of them arrived already refreshed… Late night cabaret, circus and burlesque is well established at Edinburgh now and this was a good showcase for many of the performers involved.
