Frankenstein by Early Doors Productions was performed at The Brentwood Theatre.
A strong cast bring this new telling of Mary Shelley classic.
This version of Frankenstein was written by Justin Cartledge, who has decided to make the Creature more sympathetic and far less monstrous. Which for me, I enjoyed that decision.
Directed by Amy Clayton who made excellent use of the Brentwood stage, splitting it into sections but also keeping the stage bear so the actors had all the space to use for the choreography.
Fights scenes, the cast becoming mass graves, forests. Brilliant vision.
Victor Frankenstein was performed by Neil Patrick, his characterisation of a manic genius was actually subtle but nice to see.
Darren Matthews was The Creature and this is one of the best performances I’ve seen in many years. Darren Matthews completely became this part, child like with questions of God and his own being of a man beyond his knowledge. It was just so captivating to see.
Elizabeth, was played by Sara Thompson, who part is vital but unfortunately a smaller role than I’d have liked. But none the less performed perfectly.
Justin Cartledge was Henry, Frankensteins friend and in many was Frankensteins conscience. An enjoyable performance full of humour and sarcasm and his fight with The Creature was one of those choreographed moments I already mentioned.
Other noticeable performances where Paul Sparrowham, Matt Jones, Amy Clayton and Ray Johnson.
Early Doors Production of Frankenstein was a great addition to the Canon of already great Frankenstein telling. This script however focused more on the question of what is God and does man have the right to play God.
Over all this was a very entertaining show with a great cast and a director at her height.
Very well done
