Jim Cartwright’s 1989 play is very popular amongst drama schools and also amateur theatre companies, probably because it only consists of monologues and mostly duologues. Since the Coronavirus pandemic, the piece has been rehearsed in kitchens, living rooms and all manner of tight spaces. And finally, despite seeing it on several times, this is first time that I’ve really understood it, really got it. And that’s due to the piece’s direction from jack Verity and the stellar performances of Jack Verity and Jude Dicken.
Jack Verity obviously knows the play well. As the Landlord and Landlady… as was M Quine (as written on the Rushen Players website) as the young boy who brought everything home. Thoroughly convincing throughout, especially the fascinating Brummie couple and the Welsh lady in the wheelchair who liked ‘big men’.
