A Stunning, Emotional Hit
Frank Wildhorn’s new musical adaptation of popular manga Your Lie in April is a moving show that surely deserves a full length run following this limited West End concert debut at Theatre Royal Drury Lane. The star of the show is undoubtedly Wildhorn’s inspired score, intertwining timeless pop melodies with the story’s classical music pieces. Standout songs include Rumi Sutton’s powerful rendition of Perfect, and the emotional duet 100 Thousand Million Stars, sung powerfully and emotionally by Sutton and Zheng Xi Yong. Rarely are lyrics caught on first listen, but it’s hard not to shed a tear whilst listening to stirring words by lyricists Carly Robyn Green and Tracy Miller. The tender book by playwright Rinne B. Groff delicately balances sensitive material with the lighthearted, youthful flair true to the original manga. And at the helm, director/choreographer Nick Winston once again met Wildhorn’s score with moving, delightful nuance in yet another major success since their partnership on Death Note. A full house mid-show standing ovation said it all, of this moving, emotional hit.
