A Monster Calls, the play, is based on the best-selling young adult novel by Patrick Ness.
The novel was based on a premise by the late Irish author Siobhan Dowd. It tells the contemporary tale of 13 year old Conor O’Malley. Conor’s parents are divorced, with his Dad remarried and living in the United States and his Mum living with terminal cancer. Conor does his best to care for his Mum despite interference from his Grandma and bullying from his class-mates.
Conor is visited on numerous occasions by a “Monster”, personified by a giant Yew Tree. (Always at 12:07) and it’s here that the contemporary tale takes a fantastical turn. Throughout the play The Monster tells Conor three separate stories of the past, in the hope of giving the boy a strategy for dealing with his struggles. In return he tells Conor that eventually he must tell his own tale. A tale of the Truth, and by the end of the play
we learn what that Truth is.
The novel A Monster Calls was workshopped and devised by the original Old Vic cast. Although using the workshopped script, I imagine there is room for some further adaptation…
