Shortlisted for the inaugural Women’s Prize for Playwriting from Ellie Keel and Paines Plough, this play will feature an all female cast and team. It will also be a flagship production from those at the new Golden Goose Theatre in Camberwell.

Charlie has just turned 18. Whilst most would be out enjoying their newlyfound adult liberties, Charlie is stuck in a white room with a bed without sheets, a window that doesn’t open, and a rat. She has to adapt fast to this new, sterile world of the adult psychiatric unit if she is to convince anyone that she is well enough to go home to her waiting mum, Vicky. Under the care her over-worked and under-trained key worker Jenny, she learns quickly that she is pretty much on her own. Until Kim turns up.

This electric new play shines a piercing light into the gaping structural holes of our mental health system, questioning how we as individuals care for one another when our institutions fail us. Chloe Yates is a writer based in Norwich. She wrote her first play aged 17, for the National Theatre’s New Views Competition. Her play was longlisted, and she has since had short plays produced at Theatre 503, Chiswick Playhouse and Theatre Deli. Her debut full-length play ‘Mental’ had a sold-out run at the OSO Arts Centre and transferred to the Edinburgh Fringe 2019. Her second play ‘A Rat, A Rat,’ was shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Playwriting. She has since worked with Clean Break and Theatre 503 and is currently studying for an undergraduate degree in English and Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia. She is developing her third full-length play with Soho Writers’ Lab.

The play will be directed by Georgia Leanne Harris, who is currently Artistic Director of the Golden Goose Theatre. Her previous directing includes Sheep by David Cantor (White Bear Theatre), Harley & Me by Lucy Walters (Lion & Unicorn Theatre) and Beyond The Grave by Simon Godfrey (Plymouth Barbican & Et Cetera Theatre). She has also assisted Oscar Pearce on Keith?! By Patrick Marmion at the Arcola and Rupert Graves on The Ungrateful Biped. Georgia has been artistic director of Tripped Theatre since 2013.
