“The grief that does not speak knits up the o-er wrought heart and bids it break”

Colin (Martin Shaw) and Angela (Jenny Seagrove) are caught in no-man’s land. Silence stretches between them. Jonty (Josh Goulding) is a young novelist searching for a deeper connection, a way to meet the lofty expectations of his demanding editor.

Driven by the loneliness of her dismal marriage, Angela finds comfort in an unexpected meeting, when she encounters Jonty on her usual bench after a weekly art class. Each with their own secrets to protect and pasts to lay to rest, a casual park-bench relationship leads to unintended consequences.

But was it really a chance encounter? Does anything worth having actually happen without design?

Capturing a world defined by grief and disconnection, where all things are possible in an anonymous digital life, Simon Williams deftly juxtaposes the despair of loss and betrayal with the thrill and freedom of a life beyond the confines of a broken relationship.

But in a world where you can be anyone online, can you really escape reality?

Alone Together by Simon Williams is the second play to make its world premiere in this year’s summer season directed by Sean Mathias.

Sean Mathias is one of this country’s foremost directors. His multi-award-winning career includes productions at the Royal National Theatre, The Kennedy Centre, The Mark Taper Forum, Paris, Sydney, and Cape Town, including many productions on Broadway, as well as 3 Summer Seasons as guest Artistic Director of Theatre Royal Windsor where he has directed productions of HamletThe Cherry OrchardDial M for Murder and Chalk Garden.

Sean Mathias said, “To be working on two exquisite pieces of new writing is so exciting. Both Frank and Percyand Alone Together  explore the fragility and joy of relationships in all their different forms, and what forges and strengthens bonds between humans, at a time when, more than ever, we all need to love and support one another.”
