Journey’s End by R.C. Sherriff

New Eltham Community Productions are very proud to be presenting this famous World War I play set in a dug-out in the British trenches before the St Quentin raid of March 1918, part of the notorious Spring Offensive. The play, which shows the claustrophobia and tension in the trenches, was written in 1928 based on the author’s own experiences as an officer in the trenches, just ten years after the events it portrays and more than ten years before the next world war. It is a powerful and moving play but is not without humour and many light moments. Although it has a strong adult theme, the play is regularly studied by years 8 or 9 in our secondary schools and so we consider it suited to secondary school aged children and above or to mature children about to go into year 6. The director and all-male cast are already experiencing both laughter and tears in the rehearsals and know that this play will become an NECP classic to be remembered for many years.
