Runnymede Drama Group (RDG) returns to the stage with ‘Uncle Vanya’ on 27-30 July at Walton’s Riverhouse Barn.
This new version of Anton Chekhov’s play sees Sonya and her Uncle Vanya whiling away time on a crumbling estate in the Ukraine countryside, visited occasionally by local doctor Astrov. When Sonya’s father suddenly returns with his alluring young wife, they disrupt the estate’s rhythms, their polite façade crumbles and long-repressed feelings emerge. The vivid, stripped-down script quickens the pace of this tale of unrequited love, ageing and disappointment in middle age whilst managing to find plenty of humour in the dialogue.
