Nell Gwynn

Nell Gwynn

Huntingdon Drama Club return with the Olivier award-winning comedy Nell Gwynn by Jessica Swale. This “bawdy, playful and highly entertaining” play runs at the Commemoration Hall, Huntingdon from 22-25 November. The action takes place in the 1660s where Charles II has returned from exile and is restored to the throne after the puritan rule of Oliver Cromwell. The merry monarch re-opens the theatres and decrees that women are to be allowed to perform on stage. Enter our heroine, the poor orange-seller Nell Gwynn, who under the tutelage of the King’s Company becomes a star of London theatre. Praised by none other than Samuel Pepys for her comic performances she soon catches the eye of the King himself and becomes his most famous mistress. It’s a true story of rags to royalty – a real life Cinderella. Written in a modern comedy style and first performed in 2016, the play echoes the likes of Shakespeare In Love, Upstart Crow and Blackadder. Full of big laughs, colourful characters and live music, Nell Gwynn is not to be missed. Directed by HDC chairman Dean Laccohee, tickets are on sale from Monday 2 October via Ticket Source and the play runs from 22-25 November with two performances on Saturday.
