Hamlet

Hamlet

Cush Jumbo (The Good Wife, The Good Fight) make her YV debut as a new kind of Hamlet, reuniting with her long-time collaborator Greg Hersov, to bring us this tale of power, politics and desire.

Joining Cush Jumbo as Hamlet, the full cast includes Jonathan Ajayi (Laertes), Joana Borja  (Guildenstern/Osric), Adrian Dunbar (Claudius/The Ghost), Tara Fitzgerald (Gertrude), Norah Lopez Holden (Ophelia), Jonathan Livingstone (Horatio), Joseph Marcell (Polonius), Adele Oni (Bernardo), Taz Skylar (Rosencrantz/Fortinbras/Marcellus) and Leo Wringer (Fortinbras Captain/Player/Gravedigger).

With Hamlet, the Young Vic is delighted to introduce a Jerwood Assistant Designer, who will work with Anna Fleischle on the set and costume design process for the show. This new opportunity represents a shared ambition between the Young Vic and Jerwood Arts to create a greater range of paid opportunities for creatives to develop their craft as part of a production. The Assistant Designer role is in addition to the Jerwood Assistant Director (an opportunity established in 2010), and Boris Karloff Trainee Assistant Director role (established in 2011); two further examples of how the Young Vic Directors Program supports and nurtures theatre makers with paid opportunities.

Hamlet is Directed by Greg Hersov, with Set and Costume Design by Anna Fleischle, Lighting Design by Aideen Malone, Sound Design by Emma Laxton, Video Design by Nina Dunn, Movement Direction by Lucy Hind, Casting by Sophie Holland CDG, with Casting Assistants Faye Timby and Finnian Tweed, Voice and Text by Barbara Houseman and Fight Direction by Kev McCurdy, with Jerwood Assistant Director Zoe Templeman-Young, Boris Karloff Trainee Assistant Director Kirk-Ann Roberts and Jerwood Assistant Designer Jida Akil.

The Tempest

The Tempest

We are delighted to announce that this summer the Cotswold Arcadians will be presenting The Tempest by William Shakespeare. This will be directed by Jonathan Vickers and performed at Hatherop Castle from Monday 19 to Saturday 24 July – one innovation this year will be that we’ll be performing a Saturday matinee, with a special price for families: it will be great if that means that we can introduce more children to the fun and magic of Shakespeare.

Probably Shakespeare’s last play, The Tempest is, for many, his finest achievement. Alive with music, bursting with action, peppered with comedy, and suffused with mystery and magic, it brings together themes of love, revenge, forgiveness and redemption. A climactic finale to the work of our greatest playwright.

The play is uniquely suited to the Arcadians. Set entirely outdoors, and playing less than two hours, it brings us some of the bard’s most enthralling characters and some of his most beautiful language. The perfect entertainment for a warm summer’s evening at Hatherop Castle. A treat to look forward to!

The Internationally acclaimed, and award-winning Sh!t-faced Shakespeare® is back for the 5th year at Leicester Square Theatre and it’s going to be a bloodbath, with their all-new production of Macbeth.

Shit-faced Shakespeare® is the hilarious combination of an entirely serious adaptation of a Shakespearean classic, with an entirely sh!t-faced cast member. With one cast member selected at random and given four hours to drink before every show, this is classical theatre as it was always meant to be seen; with a gin in one hand, a cup of wine in the other and a flagon of ale in the other…

Upon hearing the weird sisters’ prediction, Macbeth and his wily wife take matters into their own hands and burn down everything in their wake. Well, almost. Fair is foul and foul is fair in this tale of prophecy gone slightly off the rails. Perhaps an inebriated actor will help the process along?

Featuring Shakespeare’s most lovable witches, ghostly best friends, hellhounds, unhinged wives, enough dead kings to give Game of Thrones a run for its money, and lots of plaid, Scotland storms London in 2021.

Audiences are invited to settle in for a pint (or two!) and raise a glass with Sh!t-faced Shakespeare®  as they present the classic combination of a Tetris-ed together Shakespeare script, a six pack of professional actors and a luge of booze. What could possibly go right?

The rotating cast includes Natalie Boakye, Flora Sowerby, Stacey Norris, John Mitton, James Murfitt, Will Seaward and Matthew Seager.

Warning: Sh!t-faced Shakespeare® is perfect for those wishing to add to their repertoire of colourful language and not for those who blush easily at the mere mention of the “F” word

Shit-faced Shakespeare®: Macbeth is playing exclusively at Leicester Square Theatre in 2021.

Supernatural Shakespeare

Supernatural Shakespeare

The Tempest | Macbeth | A Midsummer Night’s Dream

The supernatural theme runs through these three Shakespeare plays where sorcery, spirits, magic, and power over the elements drive the action.
In addition, the darker components of witchcraft and prophecy sit at the heart of Macbeth.

In A Midsummer Night’s Dream love potions, magic and a surreal world combine to create a night of chaos for young lovers and turmoil in the Fairy Kingdom.

In The Tempest Prospero channels the power of his sorcery through the spirits he commands. The island itself, far from anywhere, has strong supernatural forces.

Whereas in these two plays the forces are used to bring about a positive outcome, in Macbeth the witches are ministers of darkness plotting for Macbeth’s soul, which indeed succumbs to the forces of evil.

These three abridged Shakespeare Shorts retain the core of each play, albeit with a focus on the supernatural. The well-loved characters all feature, and the powerful speeches are woven together with a newly authored narrative delivered by a dynamic character in each play.

So, journey with us to enchanted islands, haunted forests, magical fairy kingdoms and a dark remote castle where witches inhabit its outer borders and evil slowly permeates its walls and those that reside there.

Shakespeare in Love and War

Shakespeare in Love and War

Shakespeare In Love And War will be performed in the open air courtyard of The George, from Tuesday 22 June to Saturday 3 July 2021, operating at a significantly reduced capacity with socially distanced seating and a smaller cast than usual.
A reduced production, specifically created for these challenging Covid times, called Shakespeare in Love and War. This is a one-act play exploring the two sides of the human heart vividly brought to life by the world’s greatest playwright and a cast of the most memorable characters ever to set foot on stage.
Audiences will feast on the lecherous Falstaff or the star-crossed lovers Romeo & Juliet; raise their patriotic spirits in the company of Henry V; delight in the knock-about comedy of Petruchio and his Kate; share the downfall of King Lear or the wonderful wit of Beatrice and Benedick. And although we had to cancel Twelfth Night, there is also a little taster of what might have been as the outrageous Malvolia trips over her own vanity.
All of these are skilfully woven, by director Richard Brown, into a tale of Love and War, staged in a novel way which respects all of the safety requirements and restrictions due to coronavirus.

THE COMEDY OF ERRORS

THE COMEDY OF ERRORS

Artwork for The Comedy of Errors by robryanstudio.com

The Maltings Theatre in St Albans presents THE ROMAN THEATRE OPEN AIR FESTIVAL from 28 May to 11 July with a mouth-watering programme of shows designed to appeal to the widest audiences. This year’s festival will be headlined by productions created and performed by The Maltings Theatre’s in-house company OVO: the swash-buckling PETER PAN, which opens the festival on 28 May and features music, song and acrobatic surprises; THE COMEDY OF ERRORS set in a beachfront karaoke bar; and THE WINTER’S TALE which stars none other than The Maltings Theatre’s Artistic Director Adam Nichols as Leontes.

THE COMEDY OF ERRORS will be directed by award-winning director Matthew Parker who says: “Think Brighton beach and end of pier style for our production of The Comedy of Errors. I love this play; it’s really funny and has all the zip and pace of a classic farce but with really funny characters and lots of room for physical comedy. I’ve decided that two of the characters in our production run a beachfront karaoke bar which means that the show will be liberally peppered with karaoke classics throughout… as well as hipsters, drag queens, fortune tellers and… nuns!”

The multi-talented cast of THE COMEDY OF ERRORS features Clare Bloomer, Sam Denia, Oliver Lynes, Sheetal Kapoor, Reece Pantry in multiple roles, Maltings Theatre favourite David Widdowson and newcomers William Donaldson, Gabriel Fogerty-Graveson, Lewis Jenkins, Rosie Edwards, and Phoebe Marshall.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

The Octagon Theatre are teaming up with the award winning Guildford Shakespeare Company (GSC) to present a live online production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream from Thu 24 to Sat 27 September 2020.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream – Guildford Shakespeare Company’s 2017 production

Premiering a live streamed production, the first of its kind for the venue, is the latest offering from Octagon Online – a hub of digital activities keeping audiences of Bolton and beyond entertained throughout the Covid pandemic and whilst the £12million redevelopment of the reimagined Octagon is completed. The theatre is set to open its doors in December.

This version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a special adaptation based on GSC’s 2017 acclaimed open-air production which was directed by the Octagon’s Artistic Director, Lotte Wakeham, who also directs this latest online version.

Shakespeare’s farcical comedy follows four young lovers who find themselves lost in a mystical wood populated by warring fairies, mischievous sprites and a group of excitable amateur actors. This classic tale features some of Shakespeare’s best loved characters, including Bottom the weaver, who is transformed into an amorous donkey, and Puck the mischievous fairy, whose misguided love potions cause hilarious results.

The 75-minute production, which will be live streamed on Zoom, features a cast of six actors. Making their Octagon Theatre debuts will be Jack Whitam (credits include Hamlet and Macbeth at the Royal Shakespeare Company) Emma Fenney (Inherit the Wind, Old Vic) Sarah Gobran (co-founder of GSC) and Matt Pinches (co-founder of GCS) – all of whom appeared in GSC’s 2017 production – as well as Misha Duncan-Barry (credits include Hamlet at Manchester’s Hope Mill Theatre) and Nathan Ives-Moiba, who was nominated for the ‘Best Newcomer Award’ at the Manchester Theatre Awards for his performance in Tull at the Octagon, and most recently performed in the Octagon’s 2018 production of And Did Those Feet at the University of Bolton Stadium.

No stranger to producing exciting and unmissable live streamed productions, Surrey-based theatre company GSC have previously produced online versions of The Wind in the Willows and a number of Murder Mystery evenings.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream – Guildford Shakespeare Company’s 2017 production

Octagon Theatre Artistic Director and A Midsummer Night’s Dream Director, Lotte Wakeham said: We’ve had fantastic feedback from our audiences about other online content produced by the Octagon during lockdown, so it felt like a natural next step to try a full production, live on Zoom! A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a favourite with our audiences, and this 75 minute version will be perfect for all ages. I’m delighted to be collaborating with the Guildford Shakespeare Company again, who truly are experts in this field of Zoom productions. I’m also very excited to be working with a brilliant cast of northern and southern actors, who I’m confident will provide a magical evening of entertainment for our audiences.”

GSC Co-Founder, Matt Pinches added: “Our especially made online events have proved incredibly popular and it has been joyous to see families and friends able to come together to share a live experience in these toughest of times. We desperately wanted to stage a Shakespeare play in this format and Dream, with its accessible storyline, beautiful speeches and laugh-out-loud comedy, was an obvious choice. We have previously worked with Lotte when she directed a truly magical show for us in 2017 and so it seemed a natural union to make with Bolton. We are thrilled to be able to present this production with the Octagon; two theatres working together for their communities whilst sharing new ideas and best practices, was an opportunity not to be missed.”

Tickets for A Midsummer Night’s Dream will go on sale on Thu 3 September with priority booking for members from Tue 1 September.

Tickets will be priced at £20 per device (max 2 people per device), and £10 per additional viewer.

For more information or to book tickets visit octagonbolton.co.uk or call the Box Office on 01204 520661.
