MY NIGHT WITH REG

MY NIGHT WITH REG

CASTING ANNOUNCED FOR THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED LONDON REVIVAL OF

MY NIGHT WITH REG

THE AWARD-WINNING BITTERSWEET COMEDY BY KEVIN ELYOT

DIRECTED BY MATT RYAN

RUNNING AT THE TURBINE THEATRE FROM 7 JULY – 21 AUGUST

Stephen K Amos (Benny), James Bradwell (Eric), Edward M Corrie (John), Paul Keating  (Guy), Gerard McCarthy (Daniel) and Alan Turkington (Bernie), will star in Kevin Elyot’s award-winning, and much-loved dark comedy, My Night With Reg.

Presented by The Turbine Theatre, this dazzling new revival of the iconic play is directed by Matt Ryan, and runs from 7 July – 21 August 2021, with press night on Tuesday 13 July.

This modern classic, which captures the fragility of friendship, happiness and life itself, won both the 1995 Olivier and Evening Standard Award for Best Comedy, after its premiere at the Royal Court and subsequent transfer to the West End.

Set in Guy’s London flat, old friends and new gather to party through the night. This is the summer of 1985 and, for Guy and his circle, the world is about to change forever, thanks to the mounting AIDS crisis.

My Night With Reg at The Turbine Theatre has designs by Lee Newby and casting by Will Burton CDG.

The Turbine Theatre is a brand-new theatre on the banks of the Thames next to the iconic Battersea Power Station, presented by Bill Kenwright and founded and led by Artistic Director Paul Taylor-Mills. The theatre is located under the Grosvenor Bridge railway arches at Circus West Village, the first chapter of the iconic Battersea Power Station’s regeneration, which is already a thriving riverside destination with exciting restaurants, bars and cafés already open, located at the foot of the iconic Grade II* listed landmark.

The Turbine Theatre is an intimate theatre with big ambitions. Everything we do revolves around one simple idea: powering the imagination.

New energy drives everything we do, from festivals of brand-new works, world premieres of new productions and classic stories reimagined for contemporary audiences.

Every story is a journey and The Turbine Theatre aims to be just the first stage for every idea, risk and labour of love that is brought to life in this electric new environment. We want to be the spark for the most talented and diverse voices that theatre has to offer.

We’re also passionate about playing a vital role at the heart of the emerging local Battersea community, offering a dynamic public space by day, and a ground-breaking theatre by night.

The extra-ordinary tale of Hamlet

We may all know the story of Hamlet: one of ghosts, deceit, oppressive families and revenge. But this surreal re-imagining of Shakespeare’s most iconic work delves far deeper into the inner workings of a dream, stranger than life itself. Immersing us in a new, spell-binding world, this entrancing production begs the question: what is reality to a mind that is already broken?

Our ensemble cast will take you on a heightened journey of isolation, betrayal, and paranoia. As the lines between dream and reality become blurred, so do the characters - many of whom have a duality to them, made physical by their own ‘dæmons’. Here Hamlet comes face to face with not only his own dæmon, but that of Ophelia’s.

Is this a dream now in the present or a scream from Hamlet’s soul for things that happened centuries ago? Mixing the modern with the gothic, the real with the surreal, this exciting and wickedly humorous extra-ordinary tale of Hamlet is sure to keep you guessing.

Runs 23rd to the 26th June at 7.45pm, daily. Tickets on sale soon via our website.

The Letter of Last Resort

The Letter of Last Resort

It all rests on one piece of paper…

Tickets are now on sale for our first indoor performance of 2021! Don’t miss the highly anticipated postponed production of The Letter of Last Resort by David Greig, which was only days away from opening last December. Runs from 16 to 19 June in the Judi Dench Playhouse. All seating will be socially distanced.

It’s late on the night after the general election. The new Prime Minister is working when she is interrupted by a request – a letter needs to be written, by her alone. It can only say one of two things, but its implications could change the face of the earth forevermore…

This captivating one-act drama, inspired by a true-life event, skillfully unpacks the debate around nuclear weapons and the complex power they hold. Written by award-winning Scottish playwright David Greig. This production was previously staged at the West End’s Jermyn Street Theatre to critical acclaim.

“Thought-provoking & witty” – Rupa Huq MP on this production in the West End.

Running Time: 50 minutes, no interval

Main Stage & Livestreamed

‘A fierce pas de deux of love, loss and anguish that will leave you breathless.’

This is how Variety reviewed the 2015 Broadway production of David Hare’s heart-piercing play, coming to the Abbey Theatre this month. ‘Some plays dissolve with time. David Hare’s Skylight actually seems to have got richer,’ writes The Guardian’s Michael Billington.

A year after his wife dies Tom Sergeant visits Kyra Hollis, his erstwhile lover, in her North-West London flat. Tom is a charismatic businessman, a successful entrepreneur. She’s a teacher who, working with children at the bottom of the social ladder, has dedicated her life to the service of others. As they fall into a battle of opposing politics, they must navigate their mutual desire. You can’t help thinking that on some profound level these two were made to be together, but can the gulf between them be bridged or is the gap too great?

Director, Terry Prince says, ‘this is really a play about relationships. A wonderful mixture of the personal and the political, it appeals to the heart and the head. We see both points of view, and any political statements have to grow organically from the interactions between the characters. Hare balances the two divergent views of society represented by Kyra and Tom. They express these not as mouthpieces of a particular political viewpoint but as two people committed to life choices which are very different.’

Set in 1995 but actually looking back at Thatcher’s Britain of the 1980s, it is even more pertinent in a society based on grotesque inequality, the society we inhabit today. The successful West End revival in 2014 with Bill Nighy and Carey Mulligan proved the play remains as relevant and impactful as it was at its premiere. This is one of the great intimate plays of passionate ideas and complex love – delicate, hilarious and thought provoking.

Performances take place on the Abbey Theatre Main Stage from Tuesday 22 – Saturday 26 June at 8pm. All performances are also being live-streamed. To book tickets please go to www.abbeytheatre.org.uk or call the box office on 01727 857861.

Staircase

Staircase

Not seen in London for more than half a century, Staircase by Charles Dyer (1928 – 2021) was a West End and Broadway hit at its premiere in the late ‘60s. Now Two’s Company, who excels at bringing back forgotten masterpieces, is proud to shine a light on this wonderful comedy.

Starring Paul Rider (Chicago, A Woman of No Importance, West End; French and Saunders, Dinnerladies on TV; The Cutting of the Cloth for Two’s Company) and John Sackville (Absolute Hell, An Inspector Calls, National Theatre; The Crown, Royal Wives at War on TV; Go Bang Your Tambourine [Best Supporting Actor Offie winner 2019] for Two’s Company), Staircase is directed by the Artistic Director of Two’s Company, Tricia Thorns (A Day by the Sea, The Cutting of the Cloth, Southwark Playhouse).

It’s the early 1960s. Charlie and Harry are hairdressers in Brixton and have been together for 20 years. Quick humour and dreams keep them afloat but same-sex relationships are illegal and Charlie has been arrested in a pub while sitting on a man’s knee. Simmering underneath the banter and hilarious mockery, Charlie anxiously awaits a court summons and Harry has his own troubles – his hair is rapidly falling out, a disaster for a hairdresser.

Running through this laugh-out loud comedy is the sadness of those unable to live openly because the law and the public condemn them to an undercover life. Change may be in the air but, for these two, it might as well be a hundred years away. Staircase is a clarion call for a more accepting and generous society; for a world where people can be who they are in their hearts; where love is love and that love is championed in all its forms.

From Here: A New British Musical

From Here: A New British Musical

Grace Mouat (Six, Arts Theatre; & Juliet, Shaftesbury Theatre; Hair, Turbine Theatre) and Andrew Patrick-Walker (Bat Out of Hell, London Coliseum; Brooklyn, Greenwich Theatre; Hair, Hope Mill Theatre) will bring From Here: A New British Musical to life at Chiswick Playhouse. They’ll be joined by Nicola Espallardo (The Pirate Queen, London Coliseum; Les Misérables, Gielgud Theatre; Working, Southwark Playhouse), and Aidan Harkins (The Pirate Queen, London Coliseum; The Importance of Being Earnest, Barn Theatre & Turbine Theatre; Closer to Heaven, Above The Stag), directed by Annabelle Hollingdale (Resident Director: Spring Awakening, The Hope Mill Theatre; Assistant Director: Heathers, The Other Palace). This incredible world premiere considers where we might just find ourselves in five years.
Do we long more for a happy ending or for a new beginning? From Here: A New British Musical explores how reaching for the end of one chapter, or the beginning of the next, may not always provide us with the results we expect. From struggling to find friends in a school playground, to first dates, to learning to live again after finding yourself alone, these often musically-interwoven stories tell of characters trying to decide whether to run headfirst into trying again or whether to stay put and hold fast.
From new writers Ben Barrow and Lucy Ireland, this contemporary song-cycle is a poetically conversational guide. From Here offers the perfect opportunity for audiences to reflect on where they are and where they’re going. And as we navigate out of a pandemic, it offers a chance to appreciate the middle of a moment too.
Lucy Ireland comments, The characters and the themes in the show all look at different situations and how the characters deal with them personally. We go on a journey with each individual and see how they process their situation and decide to act upon it. This show is timely and relevant to our current situation, but will be timeless in the years to come and therefore suitable for all.

Theatre and its audiences know how vital it will be to support each other on the road to recovery and in these seemingly crucial final months, we ask your support, kindness, and most of all your theatrical presence, as we embark on our journey back to the stage. Public health and the safety of our audiences are still our utmost priority and the performances will adhere to the current government guidelines.”

This concert series is musically directed by George Dyer, and produced by Greg Barnett and Hugh Summers for Wild Mountain Productions Ltd.
