“Big Brother is Watching.”

George Orwell’s ominous words could not ring more true than they do today.

Except this world is one where we have aspired to bring Big Brother into our homes. Smart phones, Alexa, Siri, Google, even our fridges and dishwashers can listen to us.

Our careers, schools, opportunities, even our friends and  partners can be decided for us by an algorithm and we have dumbed complex debate down to a simple Good or Bad…. Good or Ungood.

Into this world steps Winston Smith, living a seemingly idyllic if utterly listelss and immobile existence where their every move is watched and listened to. Where there every decision is pre-determined, where even their dreams may not be private and where anyone can be made to disappear in a single heartbeat.

This world may not be as fictional as we’d like.

“You’re a rebel from the waist down.”

This is a brand new adaptation of George Orwell’s dystopian masterpiece. The setting, characters, style may well be updated and look vastly different from the world Orwell invisaged, but the message is chillingly relevant.

Adapted by Laura Turner and Stephen Gillard, Orwell suggested from 1948 that the world of 1984 would look like this. What about 2084? Where will we be then?

“Who controls the past, controls the future.”

This will be The Asylum Player’s most challenging show to date. A multimedia infused performance that asks questions such as; How much we are willing to give up to protect what we have? How much privacy will be sacrifice for the latest technology?

Sister Act

Sister Act

Sister Act is a joyous show that uses music to bring different communities, and lifestyles, together.

Deloris Van Cartier is an aspiring singer in Philadelphia, where she is auditioning to perform at her gangster boyfriend’s nightclub. Deloris believes that Curtis is going to introduce her to a big producer, but is upset when he tells her she is not ready. Hurt and rejected, Deloris decides to break up with him, but when she goes to find him she accidentally sees him kill one of his cronies. Deloris runs to the police, who place her in hiding at a convent until Curtis is brought to trial.

At first, Deloris feels as though it will be the worst thing in the world, chafing against the constraints of convent life and an immovable Reverend Mother, but once she is introduced to the struggling choir at the convent, everything changes. She finds that many of the nuns at the convent are not that different from her, and that they are quite fun to be around. They help give her a bigger purpose in her life, showing her a genuine love and affection that was missing prior to her arrival at the convent.

A Bunch of Amateurs

Washed-up Hollywood action hero Jefferson Steele, arrives in England to play King Lear in Stratford only to find that this is a sleepy Suffolk village with a Bunch of Amateurs!

11-14 October with a matinee on Saturday starting at 2.30.
Synopsis:
Keen to boost his flagging career, washed-up Hollywood action hero Jefferson Steele, arrives in England to play King Lear in Stratford only to find that this is not the birthplace of the Bard, but a sleepy Suffolk village and the cast are a bunch of amateurs trying to save their theatre from being bulldozed to make way for executive homes rather than RSC stalwarts.
Jefferson’s monstrous ego, vanity and insecurity are tested by the enthusiastic amateur thespians – who are not averse to a spot of ego, vanity and insecurity themselves. As acting worlds collide and Jefferson’s career implodes, he discovers some truths about himself and his relationships with other people… along with his inner Lear!

Sheila’s Island

Sheila’s Island

Somehow, while participating in a company team building weekend in the Lake District, Sheila has unwittingly stranded her team of middle managers on an island in the middle of Derwent Water. They are not amused!  No food, soaking wet, mobile battery dead and some very odd noises in the undergrowth. Is someone stalking them?  Are there murderous pike in the lake? Why won’t Julie’s husband return her call? And why does the rescue boat have a disco on it?  From the writer of Calendar Girls and Kinky Boots comes a comedy about fog, friendships, survival and one cold sausage.

Blithe Spirit

Blithe Spirit

“I long ago came to the conclusion that nothing has ever been definitely proved about anything.” Have you ever been haunted by your past? Charles Condimine is. Somewhat more literally than most actually. The cantankerous writer and his new wife, Ruth, are dealing with the less than wanted attentions of Charles’ former (and rather late) wife Elvira. There must be a solution to this mess, surely. In walks the “happy medium” Madame Arcati. Problem solved…right?

Directed by Margaret Reading, Noel Coward’s hilarious farce hits The Blue Room stage this summer. Sarcastic ghosts, flying crockery and Coward’s famous turn of phrase will have you laughing all the way through.
