History: The local press records the opening of the Barn Theatre on Monday 4th January 1932, with the four drama groups most involved in its preparation each performing a one-act play, with performances every night of the week: Folk Players 'The Invisible Duke' by F. Sladen-Smith, Welwyn Stores Drama Society 'The Fur Coat' by F.J. Talbol, the Welwyn Thalians 'The Devil among the Skins' by E. Goodwin and the Theatre Society 'The Leading Lady' by H.B. Pointing. The first full-length production was of Shaw’s ‘Misalliance’, staged by the Theatre Society: in that opening year there were ‘only’ 5 full-length shows, compared with 10 in 1933!

Barn Theatre Trust
Report SocietyThe Barn Theatre Trust exists for all those people, young and old, interested in the Theatre, both on and off stage. Many of our members simply enjoy the social aspects of the Theatre. In addition to offering acting roles in plays, or opportunities to get involved backstage with creative teams, the Club has other activities including special Club nights and social events, plus use of the Club Room Bar most evenings. A monthly newsletter keeps members informed of forthcoming events.
Newcomers to the Barn are usually impressed by two things: the quality of the productions, and the astonishing transformation of a 17th-century farm building into a modern, well-equipped theatre. The ancient huge timbers of this listed building house a recently refurbished, raked auditorium, affording excellent vision from all seats, plus a cosy Club Room Bar. Those same timbers were carbon-dated a few years ago to 1580!
Over the years The Barn Theatre Trust has achieved a high reputation, regularly winning Drama Festival Awards for the quality of its productions, and has attracted some of the best talents. It also has an enviable record of attracting high volume audiences.
In addition to providing a varied programme of plays, we regularly offer special presentations by well-known names who have appeared in the West End, the Royal National, and the RSC.
As one first time patron said, “I had no idea that this quality of theatre was on my doorstep”.
