It was founded by Stanley Lockyer and Irene Richardson, ardent fans of Gilbert & Sullivan who encouraged their fellow choir members to have a go at performing G & S. In 1951 the society changed its name to the Batley Congregational Operatic Society and remained at Hanover Street until the church closed for demolition in 1973. The society spent the next few years at Cross Bank church. In 1977 the society again changed its name to its present name of Batley Gilbert & Sullivan Society. The society performs one of the operettas each year in April and is hoping to celebrate its 70th anniversary in 2018/19.

Batley Gilbert & Sullivan Society
Report SocietyWe are an enthusiastic group of amateur performers dedicated primarily to performing the works of W.S. Gilbert and A.S. Sullivan. We do occasionally perform concerts to demonstrate that we can sing things other than Gilbert & Sullivan!
