History: Cassio O S started as Cassio Operatic Society in 1949. It grew out of a group drawn from the choir of St Michael’s Church in West Watford who were giving concerts before the Second World War and progressed to pantomimes and shows. The Society put on Gilbert and Sullivan operettas at St Michael’s Hall for the next 12 years with the exception of a very successful production of “Merrie England”. In 1962 the Society negotiated with the Watford Palace Theatre, to do a show there. The move away from G & S has enabled the Society to present a wide range of shows over the years. They have continued to present a show there in the autumn to the present day, except for 1981, when the theatre closed for a year for refurbishment and Cassio performed at Watersmeet Theatre in Rickmansworth, and 2002-03 when the theatre again closed and the Society moved to the James Theatre at Watford Boys Grammar School. 1978 saw a momentous event in Cassio’s history. The Society took on Hut 40 at Lincolnsfields, Bushey and so Cassio acquired its own Hall for rehearsals and social events and for the next 27 years its own theatre, where we presented 15 Spring productions. A second annual production at the Watford Palace Theatre was negotiated in 1996 and for 6 years Cassio put on 2 major productions. The closure of the Palace Theatre for 2 years ended that and we are back to one production there each autumn but in recent years there have performed smaller shows at the Pump House Theatre in Watford. In 2005 Lincolnsfields was sadly relinquished. Cassio O S are currently rehearsing at Watford Town & Country Club and 2009 saw our Diamond Anniversary – over 60 glorious years and still singing!
