History: We celebrated our 65th Anniversary in 2010 with a compilation dinner/show including specially written sketches parodying backstage life. CADOS was initially set up as Chingford Arts Circle (CAC) which comprised various sections: a music group, a literary and discussion group, a musical appreciation and gramophone records group,a drama group and a fine arts group. Early on, rehearsal rooms were private houses, Richmond House School and the canteen at Chingford Laundry, until the Club House was opened in 1947. By 1954 many of the groups had folded so it was decided that the company would focus all their energies on giving performances of operas and plays, and the name CADOS was born. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, having previously performed in local school halls, CADOS took eight different musical shows to the Scala Theatre (in London’s West End). Its seating capacity was 1,100 and the first performance there of Love from Judy in 1957 cost a staggering £1,000 - equivalent to over £16,000 today! Meanwhile the rehearsal venue had moved to Friday Hill House, Simmons Lane, and from the early 1960s the group was also performing at the newly opened Chingford Assembly Hall. Chepping Hall, Sewardstone Road, became the home of CADOS until very recently. We continued to use the Chingford Assembly Hall as our main performance venue, with a few shows at the Kenneth More Theatre in Ilford, smaller scale performances at Chepping Hall, and one performance of Half a Sixpence even making it all the way to Malta in 1987! Plus we took South Pacific to Ireland as our entry in the Waterford Festival. In 1983, the then artistic director, Janet Roust, set up our Junior Theatre Groups which are still thriving today. In 2004 CADOS moved to Mornington Hall, The Green Walk, Chingford, an historic building of the 1920s. However, October 2008’s production of Calamity Jane brought an eagerly awaited return to the larger venue of the Kenneth More Theatre, Ilford, for the first time since 2002. Alongside varied productions we are currently continuing to refurbish the hall for the use of the local community as well as our rehearsal and theatre space.
