History: In the winter of 1895, the Long Eaton Co-operative Society Limited formed its first choir under the leadership of Mr C Marshall. In 1908 the choir attended the 21st National Co-operative Festival annual gathering at Crystal Palace and by 1916, had attended Fifteen contests: 11 first-places, two second-places and one third-place. The Choir also held the Challenge Cup in all but two years between 1907 and 1915! The intervening years saw a gradual move away from solely choral work and led to a concert version of Carmen followed, in 1928, by a production of Faust. 1938 saw the first full musical production, "Merry England", and in the same year the choir was invited to sing at Pebble Mill. In 1947 the "Mikado" was staged. The next fifteen years were filled with the productions of Gilbert and Sullivan Operettas, apart from 1951 and 1960 when "Merry England" was the production. Now known as the Long Eaton Co-operative Society Limited Senior Choir, 1962 saw a change in direction with a production of "The Desert Song". In 1964 the group became known as "EDACRA" - the word "Arcade" in reverse in recognition of the Arcade Buildings which housed the Co-op's Education Committee (the word "~Arcade" already being used by our sister group -The Arcade Players). "The White Horse Inn" was performed in 1965 using the Long Eaton Silver Prize Band as part of the production. In 1978 the group’s name was changed to Erewash Musical Society, when lack of theatre venues in Long Eaton meant the Society moved to Friesland School, Sandiacre. In 1984 the Society moved back to Long Eaton with its venue at the Wilsthorpe School, and then in 1988 the Duchess Theatre at the Chatsworth Centre. Over the following years Erewash Musical Society has performed a wide variety of Musicals and concerts. In 2003 our production of ‘Sweet Charity’ went on to win the NODA regional award for Best Musical. We were nominated for NODA Best Musical for our 2008 production of HMS Pinafore (where we were a highly commended runner up). Our programme for HMS Pinafore that year won Best Programme in the East Midlands. The 2009 Production of "The Full Monty" sold out well in advance of show week and went on to be runner up in the NODA awards Best Musical category. In 2009, led by volunteers from the Main Society, we formed a Youth Group section, affectionately known as EMUs, for young people aged 11-18. This group has gone onto great success, performing 2 show per year and we now have a waiting list of youngsters wanting to join. 2012 sees us in the enviable position of being nominated for NODA Awards in the Best Musial, Best Programme and Best Youth Group Musical. Despite our success, our main desire has and is to enjoy what we do in order to give our audiences a professional production. A friendly society, with a programme of social events, there's always a welcome for new members at EMS.
