History: The R.S.S. was founded in 1934 to perform Shakespeare's plays annually in the open air, originally in the Terrace Gardens, Richmond. Various temporary theatre ‘homes’ around the borough saw the repertoire soon expand with productions all year round. In 2007 we celebrated twenty-five years in our own theatre, the Mary Wallace Theatre. In more recent years our open air productions were in Marble Hill Park and currently in the gardens of York House. Our Youth Theatre for 9-13 year-olds had been very successful for a number of years, and 2008 saw the launch of the All’s Well Youth Theatre for 14-18 year-olds. Both these have their own full-scale production each year. Including the two Youth Theatre productions, we have ten shows a year, with the widest possible range of playwrights.

Richmond Shakespeare Society
Report SocietyThe Richmond Shakespeare Society is a highly-respected amateur dramatic society with a Membership from a wide area.
Founded in 1934 to perform Shakespeare’s plays annually in the open air, we have grown to have a programme of eight productions a year by vastly differing playwrights of all eras, from ancient Greece to the modern day. We have our own theatre (which is extremely well-equipped), the Mary Wallace Theatre by the riverside in Twickenham.
We are always very happy to welcome new members, both those who will become involved in our activities and those who simply wish to enjoy our performances.
For those interested in taking part in the work of the Theatre, experience is not essential – we will teach you all you need to know to become a valuable member of our team in whatever area of expertise attracts you.
