The Finborough Theatre wins the London Pub Theatre of the Year Award
The Finborough Theatre has been named London Pub Theatre of the Year 2020 by London Pub Theatres Magazine at their annual awards ceremony. A recording of this year’s online ceremony will be available to stream soon.
At the same ceremony, the theatre also won the magazine’s inaugural Standing Ovation Award for Best Rediscovery/Adaptation for the 2019 production of The Wind of Heaven by Emlyn Williams, the first London production in 75 years.
This latest award comes in the same week as the announcement of a grant from the DCMS and Arts Council England’s Culture Recovery Fund.
Neil McPherson, Artistic Director of the Finborough Theatre, said: “…we are very far from out of the woods yet, and our #SaveOurTheatres Crowdfunder campaign is still running until 8 November 2020. Part of a national fundraising initiative with Theatres Trust, every penny donated to our campaign will go towards supporting the future of the Finborough Theatre, our reopening, and online content while we are closed.
“Thank you to everyone who has supported the campaign already, including actor Simon Callow who shared these kind words about us: ‘The Finborough Theatre is truly indispensable: its constant discovery both of new writing and forgotten plays of the past, its encouragement of young artists, its astonishing turnover, mean that it is a source of constant revelation, a guarantor of vitality for an art form that needs constant challenge and refreshment. That, the Finborough supplies in spades. Moreover, it has no axe to grind: it simply believes in providing an unending supply of remarkable plays in vivid productions. The health of the theatre would be seriously damaged if, God forbid, it were to disappear. Long live the Finborough!’
“We still need support to reach our target of £25,000. Please do consider donating (no donation is too small) and sharing with your friends to ensure that we can continue presenting vibrant new writing and unique rediscoveries both in lockdown and for years to come.
We will continue our #FinboroughForFree series of archive productions streamed online through our YouTube channel (together with subtitled versions through Scenesaver) until the end of the year. For more information about what’s currently on offer from #FinboroughForFree, click here.
“Above all, we are hard at work planning an exciting programme for 2021 which we will be announcing very soon.”
