Dragons and Mythical Beasts Live is a new show by the creators of Dinosaur World Live and we caught the show in Canterbury this week as part of its mini-tour; highly accessible by all ages due to being short at around about an hour of fun and adventure. The auditorium was awash with children and the interactive format meant time flew and the intended audience had a great time. Luckily as we manoeuvre around any lingering COVID restrictions, children are invited up onstage to help hapless Dave complete the six tasks to help make him a hero.
Alongside Dave (Ben Galpin) is his pet, dragon George – heroes don’t have pets (operated by either Antony Antunes, Emily Cooper, Elaine Hartley , Samuel Parker or Liam Wright), adorably cute and mischievously playful. The puppets are created with great detail and handled in such a way that their human handlers do not detract from the entertainment they bring.
I think the secret of this show’s popularity, is that it has something for everyone. Six varied mythical beasts (no spoilers here) means whatever your child is into, they will see it brough to life onstage and enjoy the process. I have previously sung the merits of modern puppetry and this show is another feather in its hat.
