Ariel Dorfman’s play about the dangers posed to even mature democracies by totalitarian elements is as relevant today as when it was first produced in 1991. Dorfman describes it as “concerning a country (probably Chile) returning to democracy after a long period of dictatorship”. While Dorfman draws inspiration from the military coup in his native country which overthrew Salvador Allende’s democratically elected Socialist government in 1973, the issues raised resonate with current times and provide the basis for an explosive piece of theatre.
Age guidance: 16+ The play contains themes of political torture and sexual violence as well as language that some may find offensive.
