Jo Emery Productions
Report SocietyJo Emery Productions presents three of Alan Bennett’s perennially popular and award-winning dramatic monologues. First broadcast in 1988 on BBC TV, the series is a classic of contemporary drama, universally hailed for its combination of razor-sharp wit and deeply felt humanity.
“Her Big Chance” – (Claire Jared)
Lesley is an aspiring actress, who prides herself on her professionalism, even after a series of unpromising extra roles on mediocre television programmes. She is thrilled to find what she believes to be her big break as the adventurous “outdoor girl” Travis who spends her time bikini-clad on a yacht in a new film for the West German market – but is it up to her high standards?
“A Lady of Letters” – (Elena Markham)
Since her mother passed away, Irene has led a sad and lonely life. Single and middle-aged, she has no friends or social life, but she does read the paper, drink her tea and spy on her neighbours, or anyone else she sees out of her window. She’s not afraid to write letters of complaint to her MP, the police, the chemist – everyone! – to remedy the social ills she sees around her – with varying results and a rather unexpected outcome.
“Bed Among the Lentils” – (Jill Priest)
Susan, a bored, nervous, alcoholic Vicar’s wife, distracts herself from her ambitious, insensitive husband and his doting parishioners by drinking copious amounts of sherry. Because of her debts with the local shop keeper, Susan starts buying her booze from Ramesh, an Asian grocer in Leeds who is young, very attractive and talks to her about his culture. These visits alter Susan’s life in a dramatic and sensual way.
