A few thoughts about pit musicians…
A non-professional music theatre show stands or falls on what happens in the pit. The musicians and music director – whether they’re in plain sight or tucked away in a side room with head phones and tech – are the foundations the show rests on. They support every singer: soloists and ensemble alike.
So who are these people? We know the amateur actors on stage are bank managers, nurses, librarians, retirees, students and lots more. Often there’s a trained actor or two in the mix. I know one, for example, an am-dram stalwart who had to give up a professional career and ran a post office in order to keep his family – an asset to every company he works with.
