DISABILITY FOCUS – Access to Theatre for the Deaf and Disabled
By Phil Lowe It was not so many years ago that if one was deaf, blind or disabled and wanted to go to the theatre or, rather daringly, actually act in a play, there were many barriers against you doing so. If you were deaf then you might be lucky to have one BSL signed performance in a week at the professional venue, and if you couldn’t attend that day – tough luck. If you were blind you might have provision to audio described performances and if you were disabled – say wheelchair-bound – then lots of theatres had little or no access for you. If you wanted to act as a blind, deaf or disabled person well, sorry but we have non-disabled actors who can do that. Daniel Day-Lewis comes to mind.
