Tamara von Werthern – Amateur Theatre is for Life (not just for Christmas!)
Christmas is almost upon us once again. And as the decorations go up, the wine mulls and carols start to fill the air, I find myself thinking about what really matters. With times tough for many, and the memories of lockdowns still fresh, there are surely few things more important than human connection – particularly the ties that endure over years, giving us comfort and continuity throughout our lives.
Enduring connection is something amateur theatre does so well. In the professional theatre world, there’s often a sense of the ephemeral. A team – previously unknown to each other – comes together, pours their hearts and souls into a project for a short period of time (bonding through powerful and intimate moments along the way) and share that work with the world. But then, after the last curtain call, they scatter, as everyone goes on to their next project (or sits at home waiting for the phone to ring…).
