It is said that the two most absorbing subjects are Sex & Death. Sex certainly sells, as evidenced from 18th Century Restoration comedy through 1970s Whitehall farces right up to a variety of modern genres. What about Death? An 80s star-studded West End production entitled The Undertaking closed after a short run because the play centred around death and very little besides. Of course, ghost and vampire stories have always abounded - but these are neatly side-stepping the issue of death itself. There is a certain kind of play that effectively transcends death, taking the audience into the metaphysical realm and humanising the afterlife.Continue reading
