Some theorise that this phenomenon, known as the ‘sadness paradox’, acts as a kind of catharsis. Others suggest that gloomy stories are easier to relate to, enabling us to understand characters and their experiences more profoundly. Regardless of the reason, directors, writers and artists have always relied on tragedy. Musical theatre is no exception.
